For people who want to physically browse, directing them to the PZs is the best answer. PZ is the call number designation for most juvenile fiction, including the picture books.
Major breakdowns in the PZ subclass include:
PZ5 : Collections
PZ6 : Early to 1860/1870
PZ7 : General juvenile belles lettres, 1870-
PZ8 : Fairy tales
PZ8.1 : Folklore, legends, romance
PZ8.2 : Fables
PZ8.3 : Anonymous nursery rhymes (incl. Mother Goose) & Stories in rhyme
PZ10.3 : Animal stories
PZ 10.4 - PZ 90 : Non-English languages
Picture books and chapter books are mixed in throughout the PZs; there is no separate classification for materials meant for younger versus older readers.
For non-fiction, there is no longer an easy way for people to browse children's materials alone, since those materials are catalogued using the standard LC call numbers and are thus mixed in with the rest of the Suzzallo-Allen collection. However, I have had good luck in making use of the Audience/Juvenile facet in UW WorldCat, which can be applied either after a search by clicking on that facet in the list to the left, or as part of the Advanced Search.
For further assistance, refer the user to the Suzzallo Reference Desk or Kathleen Collins.
