The Legend of John Brown, a series of prints based on original gouache paintings by Jacob Lawrence, will be installed in the 4th floor study area of the Allen Library, during the week of June 23rd. The collection is owned by the Washington State Arts Commission. Through negotiations with Kurt Kiefer, the Campus Art Administrator, and after lengthy discussions of the Libraries Art Advisory Committee, and the approval of Betsy Wilson, Dean of University Libraries, the Libraries will host the exhibit for a period of 5 years. To prepare for the exhibit, the study area and elevator lobby will be painted during the week of June 16th (interim week). Sometime during the next academic year, most likely during Winter Quarter 2009, there will be an educational event, sponsored by the Libraries, to highlight the Legend of John Brown series. The Washington State Arts Commission website has a display of all of the prints: http://www.arts.wa.gov/public-art/legend-of-john-brown/Artwork01.html
