Wireless Connnectivity Problems In Suzzallo & Allen

Over the last week or so I've heard several reports of users having difficulties using the UW wireless network within Suzzallo/Allen. In most cases they appear to be connected just fine (signal strength is strong and the connected network is in fact University of Washington), but will get a "server not available" message when browsing the Web.
This isn't something we in ITS can easily troubleshoot but the folks at UW Technology would definitely like to hear from users in the hopes of isolating the problem.

Here are some steps that can be taken:

  • If the user is willing, have them call 206-221-6000 (1-6000 from a campus phone). This goes directly to UW Technology's Network Operations group and someone should be able to get the necessary diagnostic information and help them resolve the problem.
  • If the user doesn't want to deal with that, you can have them try the following steps, in this order:

    1. Reboot the laptop. Try browsing again, if that fails, go to step #2.

    2. Renew their DHCP lease. How to do this varies by operating system, so don't feel that you need to help the user with this task if you don't know how to do it. Try browsing again, if that fails (or you skip this step), go to step #3.

    3. Have them disconnect/remove the University of Washington as a preferred wireless provider, reboot, then reconnect to the UW wireless network. If this doesn't work they really should call Network Operations for help.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
