Tips for Working at the Allen South Info Desk

As we take on staffing the Allen South Info Desk next week, there are a few things we should consider in advance:

This has been a full-service circulation desk until now, meaning it was a pick-up location, there were some course reserved held there, users could return items there and have them checked in with a receipt if they wanted. Because this desk will be like the Allen Info Desk, we won't be providing any those services there.
  • The book return slot is built into the front of the desk, and the books drop onto a cart with a spring-loaded surface, so the top depresses as more weight is added to it. Suzz Circ staff will empty this on the same basis as they do the other book returns. I will post a sign next to the return slot like the sign at the other book returns.

  • There will certainly be times when we will have to refer users at this desk to Suzzallo Circulation. If the question has to do with material the user wants to check out, such as a non-circulating journal, you will need to send the person up and over the breezeway to get to Suzzallo Circ.

  • Questions about course reserves we will look up on the Course Reserves public Web page.

  • Picking up holds questions, we will just look up in MilCirc, as usual.
We will be supporting the PCs, print station, and the public copier on the opposite side of the lobby from this desk. I'll prepare an 'I'll Be Right Back' sign for the desk, in case we need to step away and a help someone over there.

Spend some time orienting yourself to your new location and thinking about the ways in which you will be giving directions from there.

Be patient while we sort out how to store handout supplies and other like things. It may take a week or two to get everything settled there. Please be prompt to let me know if something has been forgotten or if you discover things we did not anticipate.
