DROP/COVER/HOLD ON! October 16 @ 10:16 am

Everyone, everywhere, should know how to protect themselves in an earthquake.

The Suzzallo and Allen Libraries will be participating in the nationwide Earthquake Drill (known as “The Great ShakeOut”) scheduled for Thursday, October 16 at 10:16 a.m. The Suzzallo and Allen Libraries are working with UW Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to coordinate a complete building evacuation as part of this drill.

NOTE: The earthquake drill will take the place of our annual fire drill this year!

What will happen during the drill?
  1. There will be a scripted building announcement over the intercom to tell people that this is an earthquake drill and that everyone should “Drop, Cover, and Hold on”.
  2. Then, in a minute or two, the building alarms will sound. At that point, everyone is to exit the Suzzallo and Allen Libraries, taking their coats, backpacks, purses, etc. with them, as they would do if this were a real earthquake.
  3. Suzzallo and Allen staff should proceed to their Evacuation Assembly Points and check in with their Floor Wardens.
  4. Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) staff will walk through the building to make sure everyone has left, before they clear folks to re-enter the building.
EH&S will also have a booth in Suzzallo on October 14 from 10:00 a.m - 2:00 p.m. with information about the Drill along with prizes and handouts.

Also, PREPARE SMART, a local company, offers UW employees a 20% discount on PreparePack Survival Kits for your office or home. Please visit the Prepare Smart website to order you kit. The 72 hour survival kit is recommendation by EH&S.

Other Libraries are welcome to participate in the earthquake drill with their own announcements.
