Scanning Problem Solution

See James’ email below about the problem we’ve been seeing with the scanners getting stuck in a reboot.  If you find any scanner in this state
  1. Press the small, white button on the back of the upper monitor mount.
  2. Wait for the power lights for both monitors to go amber; then press the button again.
  3. Wait for the monitor to restart and come back to the scan screen.  This can take 1 full minute or more.
  4. If the scanners does not come back to the scan screen, repeat the reboot steps above.

I just want everyone to be aware of the KIC Station freezing issue. This is being caused by exporting a large amount of scans to email. Either it was a few versions ago or the previous version, the program used to separate the scans into separate emails, but the current version tries to compress the scans into one email which is causing the freezing. I spoke to the vendors who will be working on bringing that feature back. They suggest to advise students not to scan more than 20-30~ pages in non-searchable pdf *to their emails in the meantime and restart the machine.

Updates to the KIC Program will be coming early July will have a new UI or so I have been told.

UW NetID Expirations

Because of some changes Microsoft is making in regards to clearing out stored NetIDs after about a year of no use, we may see more returning UW students (I’m thinking this will especially effect Access Program students) whose NetIDs don’t allow them to login to the Student Workstations.  Generally, they will be able to login to MyUW and to register for classes; but they won’t be able to login to the student workstations here or in Odegaard.

If you ever experience something like this, it’s always a good idea to ask the person their current status at the UW (student, faculty, staff, etc.).  If they state they are a returning student, it’s likely this is what they are running into.  Direct them to the NetID Website and have them go through the process of resetting their password.  This will probably solve the problem, though it may take several hours to go into effect.  If after that it continues to be a problem for them, have them contact UW IT by calling 206-221-5000 or by emailing help@uw.edu.  Phoning would be quicker.

Humans vs. Zombies - Winter, 2018

The winter quarter Humans vs Zombies Tag game will begin today, January 8th and conclude on Friday January 12th.  This game has been played at UW for several years and there is usually very little disruption to the Libraries. We expect this quarter will be the same. The following information may be of interest to all staff, particularly to those staffing public service desks.
This quarter's game will begin at 6:00am each day, and conclude at 5:00pm. All players will be marked with bright orange bandannas located either on their upper arm or head.
Players are not to play the game indoors. Playing the game includes running, chasing, tagging, stunning, or yelling to other players. Not playing the game includes walking through a building, or sitting in a hallway, even while wearing the orange bandanna.
Players are encouraged to remove their bandannas and put stunning devices away while inside campus buildings.
Players may use toy foam dart blasters AND socks during the game, although these blasters may not be painted or disguised in any way.
If a game-related disruption is caused in a library, staff should ask the player(s) to identify themselves, which they are required to do. Staff should then file a report in the Security & Disruptions Database and Chelle Batchelor, Director of Access Services, will follow up.
More information can be found on the UW Humans vs. Zombies Tag website.
