Public 2-Sided Printing as Default

With the latest images being deployed (both by Libraries ITS and Access+ staff) on all the public computers in the libraries, the 2 large labs on the Seattle campus, and at Bothell and Tacoma, the default print format for all black and white printing will be 2-sided. This step is to meet the mandate set by the Governor earlier this year, that within 1 year all state funded agencies must reduce their paper consumption by 30%.

According to the mandate, all printing should be 2-sided unless there are significant reasons for not doing so. Also mandated is the switch to using 100% recycled paper in all copiers and printers, a switch Creative Communications is making over the next couple of months in all the public copiers and printers.

One concern that has been raised over this change is that some faculty have traditionally not allowed students to submit 2-sided printed papers. The president of the Faculty Senate has been apprised of this change, is supportive of it, and will be working with the Senate to gain its full support, as well.

By the beginning of the term, it is hoped that Pharos software will be changed so there will be an initial pop-up window (prior to the document naming window) alerting users that their print job will be printed 2-sided, unless they choose to manually change that print job to 1-sided. To change a print job to 1-sided, all the user has to do is close the naming pop-up window and resend their print job choosing the printer which is not 2-sided, e.g., ALLEN_SUZZALLO instead of ALLEN_SUZZALLO_2-SIDED.

There will be publicity on the various labs and Access+ home pages alerting users of this change; and Creative Communications will be submitting a press release to the Daily to reach as many students as possible via that publication, as well.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
