Using Chrome and Firefox at the Information Desks

Here are the recommended practices for browser use at the Information Desks -

  • Chrome is only used for ALMA.
  • Use Firefox for everything else, including Desk Tracker
    • When a user needs help with UW Libraries Search or anything to which they may need to login:
      • Open a Private Browsing window.  (This will open a temporary separate Firefox session, which you can close without effecting the primary session you opened when you came on desk.)
        1. In Firefox, click on File in the toolbar
        2. Click on Open New Private Window.
        3. After you are finished helping the user, simply close (X-out of) this window.
The nice thing about this practice is that you are able to open a fresh session for a user, then close that session when finished, to protect that user's privacy, and still be able to have your original session still open.

It is best practice to login as a guest when logging into UW Libraries Search to help a user.  You will still be able to see everything as if you were logged in as yourself because you are recognized as being on campus.
